CN does not recognize calm as a regulatory or safety issue. If exhausted workers seek relief after work beyond the 10-hour limit set by the collective agreement, the company would first ask workers to “do the job now and file a complaint later” if they were unhappy. Under the new agreement, the company will abandon the “Work now-grieve-later” policy if tired employees try to rest and be relieved, meaning they would not be forced to continue working. Four new preliminary agreements have been concluded with Unifor National Council 4000 and CN and CN Transportation Ltd in Montreal. Proposals have been exchanged and further negotiation dates are scheduled for the start of the week of February 4, 2019. The five collective agreements expire on March 31, 2019. The new treaty focuses mainly on safety, particularly with regard to crew fatigue and working time. The agreement was reached after an eight-day strike last November. Neither party disclosed the terms of the agreement in their statements. The four negotiating committees of the Unifor Council are unanimous and determined to find the best possible agreements. We want to assure our members that we will work on your behalf to make gains in your work rules, wages and benefits. MONT-AL, January 31, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Shipyard workers and Canadian Railway (CN) attendants voted 91.3% in favour of ratifying a new 3-year collective agreement.
The more than 3,000 workers are represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC). The agreement provides for the start and end of positions in the employee`s locker facility or at another agreed location to determine when the workers are on time. Previously, the company counted trips to Denern as downtime, which significantly reduced sleep time. Trips inside the locker can sometimes take hours, and federal work and rest rules required less than 6 to 8 hours outside the stations. Details of the agreement will be retained until ratification by TTC members, a process that is expected to take approximately 60 days. If part of this agreement is invalidated or unenforceable under existing legislation, including, but not limited to, the following warranty exclusions and limitations, the invalid or unenforceable provision is replaced by a valid and enforceable provision, closest to the purpose of the original provision, and the rest of the agreement remains in force. More than 2,250 members, who work as members of the National Council 4000 at CN across Canada, voted to ratify new collective agreements. During the week, many discussions took place on key issues.
The negotiating committee that has been discussed can raise important issues that affect members on a daily basis and strive to reach an agreement. The Teamsters would like to thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again for respecting the workers` right to strike. The union also wishes to pay tribute to Labour Minister Filomena Tassi, Transport Minister Marc Garneau and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (CSMF).
