Honor Code Agreement


All assignments submitted in this course must be yours and be created exclusively for this course. All your sources (whether for ideas, quotes, paraphrases, etc.) must be duly recognized and documented. Failure to indicate your sources (intentional or unintentional) is plagiarism. It also involves presenting a document written for you by a third party as a full-fledged job. The use of more than four words from another author must be indicated as a direct quotation, either with quotation marks or in an advanced block quotation; failure to do so constitutes plagiarism, even if the source is indicated. In accordance with the University Directive, all alleged violations of the code of honor are reported to the Dean of Study, which can lead to sanctions such as failure of the task or course and suspension or exclusion from the university. I am committed to upholding the ideals of honor and integrity by refusing to betray the trust placed in me as a member of the Georgia Tech community. I promise, to my honor, that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance in this task/examination. Section 2. Objectives An academic code of honor at Georgia Tech aims to nurture a community based on trust, academic integrity, and honor. It aims in particular to: (a) all procedures provided for in the Code of Honour are confidential and participants in the proceedings are required to keep confidential the information related thereto.

Breaches of confidentiality shall be corrected by this Code, by any applicable codes of conduct or by staff in the event of a breach of the Higher Education Directives. This paragraph does not limit communication with university officials when knowledge is necessary for the performance of officials` duties and does not limit the disclosure provided for by law. One of the values of a promise of honor is the regular repetition of a campus-wide commitment to academic integrity. Writing and signing a promise of honor and seeing other students doing the same sends a strong message that academic dishonesty is not considered acceptable behavior among students and that promoting academic integrity is a responsibility that students share with faculty members. This perspective has been consistently repeated by university of Maryland faculty members, graduates of honor code schools. Faculty members may choose to include a Pledge of Honor/Honor Contract in their courses to express their commitment and demonstrate compliance with the Academic Honesty Directive and its standards in all areas of academic work. “Professors who invite students to sign the Pledge of Honour mean that teaching and learning have an ethical component. Students who write by hand and sign the oath reaffirm a sense of pride in the integrity of their work” (www.shc.umd.edu/SHC/HonorPledgeInformation.aspx). “To my credit, I promise that I did not help with this task” (University of Virginia) When reviewing the concept of honor promises, the university`s Senate Committee on Student Behavior also found that the pledges generated strong support from honor code school graduates. It is important for all students to understand and abide by the rules of academic honesty, as “academic honesty is at the heart of the academic enterprise.” Academic honesty “is the basis of intellectual freedom promoted and shared by all members of the academic community, and it embodies the belief that true academic freedom and discourse can only exist within a framework of honesty, integrity and responsibility” (new.oberlin.edu/arts-and-sciences/academic-resources-and-support/honor-code.dot.
